6 killed, 6 injured after mini-bus falls into gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and six others injured Saturday after a mini-bus carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The accident took place in mountainous Kawa-Ramnagar area of Udhampur district, about 235 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today a mini-bus bearing registration number JK14A-0273 rolled down at Kawa in Ramnagar, resulting in on spot deaths of six passengers and injuries to six others," a police official said.

Following the accident, authorities rushed police and health department officials to the spot to carry the injured and the dead.

According to officials, the injured were immediately removed to the main hospital in Udhampur town.

The cause of accident was not known immediately. Police officials have registered a case and initiated investigations into the deadly accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to an official report released recently, on average, India witnessed over 400 deaths in road accidents every day during 2016.
