NEW DELHI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people including two police personnel were killed Sunday morning after a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a pond in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The car fell into a pond in Aligarh district, about 418 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"This morning a car carrying seven people fell into a pond here, killing seven people," a police official said. "The dead include a police sub-inspector and constable."

According to police officials, the policemen accompanying civilians were on duty to resolve some case.

Officials blamed foggy weather conditions prevalent during morning hours for the accident.

Reports said no sooner the accident took place, police officials were informed and reached the spot to carry out rescue work.

"The bodies have been fished out from the pond and sent to post-mortem," the official said.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations to ascertain the actual reason behind the accident.

On Friday night 13 people were killed and three others injured after the mini-bus they took plunged into a river in Maharashtra state.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to an official report released recently, on an average India witnessed over 400 deaths in road accidents every day during 2016.
