GAZA/RAMALLAH, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Palestinians were injured in clashes with the Israeli army forces in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Friday, medical sources and eyewitnesses said.

Clashes broke out after Friday's prayers upon the call of the Palestinian national and Islamic powers to consider Friday a "day of rage" against the declaration of U.S. President Donald Trump that the disputed holy city Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Eyewitnesses said the fierce clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers broke out in the village of Belien north of Ramallah, where demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers, who fired back with tear gas, rubber and live gunshots.

Similar clashes also erupted in several West Bank towns and cities, where soldiers used tear gas canisters, rubber and live gunshots to disperse demonstrators.

In the Gaza Strip, hundreds of people joined a demonstration organized by Islamic Hamas movement, calling for escalation of protests against Israel.

Eyewitnesses said dozens of Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Israeli soldiers close to the borders between eastern Gaza and Israel, where the soldiers used tear gas and live ammunition against the demonstrators.

The Palestinian health ministry said in an e-mailed press statement that about 16 Palestinians were injured in the Gaza Strip and three in the West Bank, in addition to dozens more treated in the field after inhaling tear gas.
