PRAGUE, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lingering drought has killed up to 100 tonnes of fish in Nesyt, a big pond in southernmost Moravia, eastern the Czech Republic, Oldrich Pecha from the Rybarstvi Hodonin fishing firm said on Saturday.

Pecha said that all fish in the pond may be dead and the estimated the loss could be millions of crowns (about hundreds of thousands U.S. dollars).

According to Pecha, the pond's water level is 180 cm lower than normal. But the pond is located in a national nature reserve, it is impossible for the company to manipulate water there to increase the water level.

Nesyt, with water surface of about 300 hectares, is the largest pond in Moravia and one of the largest in the Czech Republic.

The hot and dry weather in the country caused the fall of water level, which is threatening aquatic species, and the situation is particularly serious in fish ponds, minor rivers and streams.
