SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- A militant was killed Thursday in an ongoing gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Hajin in Bandipora district, about 32 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight started this morning between militants and joint contingents of army and police here," a senior police official posted in Bandipora told Xinhua. "So far one militant has been killed."

Police officials said they suspect presence of three to four militants trapped in the village.

Locals said they heard sound of blasts and gunfire in the village.

"Firing is going on and we can hear the sound of blasts and gunfire from a distance," Mohammed Ashraf, a local resident said.

On Wednesday two militants were killed in a similar gunfight in Anantnag district of the region.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
