SUVA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Meteorological Office announced on Thursday a meteorological drought for Fiji after some parts of western and northern Fiji have been without rain for 10 weeks.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Fiji's Director of Meteorological Services Ravind Kumar said Thursday the effects on agriculture is expected to worsen with the average to less than average rainfall predicted for September and October.

"The Agriculture production with the continuance duration of the dry spell, the production or the yield will be low and then we need to see how best we can conserve some of those that can be used later," Kumar said.

The onus is on those Fijians living in the worst affected areas to conserve water and use the basic necessity wisely where possible, he said, adding that another area of concern is the threat of bush fires given the dry conditions.

More than 100,000 households in Fiji engage in agricultural activities such as growing crops, raising livestock, fishing, freshwater aquaculture or marine aquaculture.
