50,000 evacuated as typhoon Mangkhut approaches

FUZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- More than 50,000 fishermen and nearly 11,000 fishing boats have been called back to port in east China's Fujian Province as super typhoon Mangkhut approaches China's southern provinces.

Work has been suspended at more than 1,600 construction sites and 128 tourist spots have been closed in the province as of Saturday morning, according to local authorities.

According to China's National Meteorological Center, Mangkhut is expected to land in Guangdong between Sunday afternoon and evening, moving northwestward at a speed of 28 km per hour, about 860 km away from the city of Yangjiang, Guangdong Province as of 3 p.m.

Affected by Mangkhut, gales already hit the city of Fuzhou Saturday morning. Strong gales and tremendous downpours are also forecast in the province on Saturday night and Sunday, the local weather bureau said.

In south China's Guangdong Province, the provincial maritime administration has dispatched helicopters and tugboats to transfer 3,238 offshore platform workers and ordered 6,266 ships to take precautions against the typhoon.

Hainan Province has also ordered the closure of all tourist sites on Sunday and Monday and schools to suspend classes depending on weather conditions.

Over 26,000 boats have returned to port in the province as of 4 p.m. Friday. Railway services in Hainan have halted ticket sales from Sept. 16 to 18.

Ferry services in Qiongzhou Strait have already been suspended as of 9 a.m. on Saturday.
