MADRID, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government has circulated the draft of a bill which aims to ban the sale of all vehicles using fossil fuels by 2040 and to prohibit them from running on Spanish roads by 2050, according to Spanish media reports on Tuesday.

The law for climate change and energy transition, which the government of Pedro Sanchez is preparing, would forbid the sale of "private cars and light commercial vehicles with direct emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)" by 2040.

Such a move would ban the sale of any vehicle running on gasoline, diesel or gas natural, as well as that of hybrid vehicles which also use gasoline or diesel.

Besides banning the sale, the government also plans to work with local authorities to prohibit vehicles which use fossil fuels from running on public roads by 2050, while oblige petrol stations to install power points to allow electric cars to be recharged.

The "El Pais" newspaper highlights that 26 percent of the greenhouse gases currently emitted by Spain come from motor vehicles, with government predictions showing that unless measures are taken, the emissions will grow by 15 percent by 2030.

The overall objective of the Spanish government is that by 2030 Spain will have reduced its CO2 emissions to 230 million tons from the current 339 million tons.
