BERLIN, April 9 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with British Prime Minister Theresa May on possible steps in another Brexit delay process ahead of the deadline this week, government spokesperson Steffen Seibert announced on Tuesday.

Details of the meeting between the two were not disclosed. German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said it was a confidential meeting.

Seibert noted, however, that there were "good reasons to talk to each other in such a difficult and volatile situation as the one in which Great Britain and the EU-27 now find themselves".

According to the British government, Merkel and May both agreed on the importance of guaranteeing a regulated Brexit.

May also informed Merkel about her talks with the opposition Labor Party and discussed a possible extension of the withdrawal period until June 30 which she was planning to bring up at a special EU summit in Brussels on Wednesday.

The decision on a renewed postponement of Brexit requested by May must be taken unanimously by all 27 EU member states, according to the German government spokesperson.

Seibert emphasized that for Germany, it had always been "very, very important that the unity of the EU-27 is maintained throughout the discussion process".

German Chancellor Merkel has repeatedly stressed that she wants to negotiate "until the last hour" to prevent a British withdrawal from the EU without a deal.

Prime Minister May faces deadlock at home as British lawmakers have rejected the withdrawal agreement she negotiated with the EU three times, while failing to come up with a majority position for any other option.
