SANAA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels said they attacked the anti-missile Patriot system at the airport of the Saudi border city of Najran on Thursday, the Houthi group's TV al-Masirah reported.

"The attack was carried out by a bomb-laden Kasif-K2 drone," the rebels said.

It was the third attack on the airport in three days.

Meanwhile, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported that the Saudi air forces intercepted and destroyed the drone above Najran airport.

The Houthi rebels intensified drone attacks on Najran this week after Saudi Arabia announced interception of the ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis toward the Muslim holy city of Mecca, a charge that has been denied by Houthis.

Earlier this week, the Iran-allied Houthi rebels vowed to strike 300 vital military targets inside Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, saying such attacks would continue until the Saudi-led coalition stops its military operations inside Yemen.

The Saudi-led coalition has been intervening in the civil war in Yemen since early 2015 to support the Yemeni exiled government against the Houthi rebels who seized most of Yemen's north, including the capital Sanaa.
