SANAA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels Wednesday claimed they fired a cruise missile targeting Abha airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

"The cruise missile hit the target and forced air navigation in the airport to halt," the rebels' TV al-Masirah quoted an unnamed Houthi military source as saying.

There was no Saudi confirmation on the alleged attack.

Saudi Air Force on Tuesday intercepted and destroyed two explosives-laden drones launched by Houthis to the city of Khamis Mushait near the kingdom's border with Yemen, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting Turki Al Maliki, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition in the war in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has witnessed more drone and missile attacks attempted by the Houthis, Yemen's Iran-allied rebels, in recent weeks. They mainly targeted Saudi airports near border cities.

The kingdom and the United Arab Emirates have led the coalition against Houthis for years in support of Yemen's internationally recognized President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
