ZAGREB, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Croatia marked the Statehood Day on Tuesday to commemorate its decision on independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991.

"We will continue to build the country of developed democracy and freedom, equality and solidarity, human rights and social responsibility," Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic wrote in his congratulatory note to the Croatian people.

Plenkovic said Croatia is a modern and well-organized state, a trusted and committed member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which achieves valuable achievements in many areas of life.

The southeastern European country joined NATO on April 1, 2009 and the EU on July 1, 2013.

"There are still many goals we want to achieve in order to make our homeland better and more developed," Plenkovic said.

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic also congratulated the Croatian people on Statehood Day, saying that Croatia is more and more famous in the world for many successes.

"The name of the Croatian state is finally and permanently enrolled on the political map of the world," the president wrote.

The Croatian government has unofficially announced the possibility that the Statehood Day may be celebrated on May 30, when the first multiparty Croatian Parliament was inaugurated, as it was until 2001.

From 2001 until today, May 30 was proclaimed the Croatian Parliament Day.

On June 25, 1991, Croatia adopted its historical decision on starting the process of separation from other former Yugoslav republics, declaring sovereignty and independence.
