NEW DELHI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The floods in India's northeastern state of Assam have turned grim as water levels in the rivers reached above the danger-mark, state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) reported on Friday.

"The overall flood situation remains grim in Assam as new areas have been inundated due to the breach of river embankments. Over 400,000 people are reeling under the fury of flood in 17 districts," it said.

According to the broadcaster, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams have been deployed to rescue people who have been hit by floods.

Temporary relief camps have been set up to shelter the flood-affected people, it added.
