NEW DELHI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The incessant downpour in India's northeastern state of Assam has worsened flood situation in lower Assam, officials said Wednesday.

"Due to incessant rains during last 48 hours, the flood situation has worsened in lower Assam districts," an official said. "The situation remains grim in Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar districts among others."

Reports said several areas in Bongaigaon have been submerged following heavy rainfall. The locals are facing various problems due to flood.

Railway tracks and roads have also been submerged following heavy rainfall in the city.

Authorities have rushed in army and disaster response force teams to carry out rescue work in these areas.

"All magistrates and concerned officials are visiting the flood affected villages and Bongaigaon town areas and making immediate necessary arrangements of relief and rescue," a local government official said.

The recent floods in the state have claimed lives of 69 people and affected 2.8 million in 19 districts of the state.

At several places, water levels have begun to recede.

Wildlife officials said the water level is also receding in the Kaziranga National Park. Floods killed 167 wild animals including 16 rhinos in Kaziranga national park, whose over 90 percent of the area was inundated. One-horned rhinos is the major attraction at Kaziranga park spread over 434 sqkm area.

Floods are an annual occurrence in Assam during the monsoon season.
