SUVA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) said Tuesday it is concerned with the increasing number of cancer cases in the island nation.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporations (FBC) Tuesday, FCS Program Manager Josephine Oyagawa said they had so far registered 152 new cases this year with one confirmed of colorectal cancer.

Oyagawa said while these patients have been diagnosed with various types of cancers, there were more unreported cases in Fiji.

She said the FCS continued to spread awareness on cancer to ensure Fijians are aware of the killer disease and how it's important for them to get regular check-ups.

Meanwhile, last year the FCS registered 198 cases of cancer with nine confirmed colorectal cancer.

The FCS was founded in 1993 and is the national cancer center in the island nation. It has established three main committees to represent the different activities offered by the Society including cancer education and health promotion, patient support services and finance and development.

A Cervical Cancer Task Force was established by the Cancer Education Committee to address cancer of the cervix, the most common form of cancer in Fiji, followed by breast cancer.
